Tips
Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is known as a technology that captures, compresses, transports, stores or utilizes carbon dioxide emitted by large carbon dioxide emission sources. This technology can effectively alleviate the greenhouse effect and is considered as a workable solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing down global warming in the future.
On December 23, 2018, CR Haifeng Power Plant Carbon Capture Test Platform, whose general contractor was China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Guangdong Institute"), successfully captured the first tank of carbon dioxide through the world's first 20-ton/day membrane separation carbon capture system, marking the formal commissioning of Asia's first multi-threaded international carbon capture test platform and the world's first carbon capture test platform based on ultra-supercritical coal-fired power generation units.
Five years of hard work finally paid off
CR Haifeng Power Plant is the rely-on unit of CCUS demonstration project under the guidance of Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission. As early as early as 2013, in order to solve the problem with carbon capture technology, Guangdong Institute dispatched its strongest force - senior experts, several doctors and post-doctors - to the research on carbon capture technology, thus making sufficient technical reserves for it to occupy a leading position in the carbon capture market.
In 2015, the CR Haifeng Power Plant Carbon Capture Reservation Research Report passed the expert review. In 2016, the Feasibility Report on the Carbon Capture Test Platform of CR Haifeng Power Plant passed the review organized by the Climate Change Response Office of Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission. In 2017, Guangdong Institute, UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Center and CR Haifeng Power Plant signed a technology service contract for the test platform. In January 2018, the construction of the test platform project was officially started. In December of the same year, the test platform project entered its commissioning stage and produced carbon dioxide for the first time.
Five years of hard work finally paid off.
In the eyes of Luo Haizhong, chief engineer of project design, "this is not only a new project, but also a cross-country and cross-industry project." Correspondingly, Guangdong Institute has adopted flexible compatible design, worked out a set of "new rules" that meet the requirements of all parties and cover different industry standards and specifications of the whole project, and continuously made bold innovation and optimization to solve engineering problems.
First, it is the first time to adopt a new type of high-efficiency carbon capture filler, which is conducive to the application in the large-scale capture projects in the future. Second, in the design of the desorption tower equipment, research on regeneration energy consumption under various process conditions has been carried out for different absorbents. Third, a new process of three-stage membrane separation has been adopted for the first time, which can obtain more than 95% of high-concentration carbon dioxide gas, and a new combined washing purification-adsorption technology for membrane product gas has been innovatively developed, which is conducive to further broadening the utilization way of capturing carbon dioxide products by membrane.
Promote the development of the CCUS industry
Guangdong Institute has been committed to the research and achievement transformation of carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies. It has established the research center for low-carbon technologies and industries and carried out extensive and in-depth cooperation with famous energy research institutions at home and abroad. In addition, Guangdong Institute has continuously increased its research and development investment and achieved major breakthroughs in carbon capture, storage and utilization technologies.
"In the future, Guangdong Institute will continue to focus on technological innovation, business model and international cooperation to vigorously promote the development of the CCUS industry," said Pei Aiguo, chief engineer of Guangdong Institute and director of the UK-China (Guangdong) CCUS Center.
According to statistics, the carbon capture test platform of Unit 1 of CR Haifeng Power Plant can capture about 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to the amount absorbed by more than 1,000 trees. The collected carbon dioxide will be used not only for food processing or industrial use, but also for China’s first safety and leak monitoring research project for offshore storage of carbon dioxide.
After its completion, the CR Haifeng Carbon Capture Platform Project will become one of the world's three largest carbon capture technology medium-scale test bases, the other two being the NCCC and the TCM. It will provide strong support for scientific research institutes of Chinese universities and enterprises to carry out in-depth research on carbon capture technology innovation, accumulate experience for the application and industrialization promotion of carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage technologies in China's power and chemical industries, which is of positive significance for promoting the construction of ecological civilization and for addressing climate change.
